Rolf Kuhlmann is a realistic painter who uncompromisingly follows his artistic visions in an idiosyncratic way. In his works, the artist reflects sociopolitical conditions, which he views from a variety of perspectives and questions causes and correlations. In his painterly complex form of different narrative strands, Kuhlmann creates a critical and at the same time poetic panorama that interprets our time. Claudia Schmid accompanied the painter with the camera for one year and documented the creation of two large-format double triptychs from the studies to the finished paintings.
For this eight-part painting cycle, the artist visits locations in nature and Athens, where he exposes himself high-contrast scenes at archaeological places and flashpoints of current affairs and processes them in drawings so that they can later be transferred in the paintings. Against the background of his pictures, Kuhlmann negotiates topics such as democracy, identity and violence, consumption, seduction, repression, flight and mortality and sheds light on our ambivalent relationship to them. With a keen eye for the creative process, Claudia Schmid creates an intimate portrait beyond artistic clichés that documents on multi-layered dramaturgical levels creative success as well as severe crises and radical upheavals, which the artist courageously and honestly faces.
